You might hear or see cross-stitch labeled on my site or store as embroidery. I sometimes will use embroidery in a tag. If you aren't famillar with the hierarchy of the needle art world, the terminolgoy can be a bit confusing. Heck, it was confusing to me as I honed my skills.
Especially, the term embroidery. It is a needleart itself but it is also a general category, similar to Christianity. Christian is a generic term used to describe people who follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Demonitions, like Luthern, are branches of Christanity. You can be a Christian and have no demonition. Are with me so far?
Embroidery, like Christanity, is a stand alone needle art with different styles and rules. It can be stitched just as embroidery with no specifiic branch or sub-group. And, embroidery has a lot of sub-groups from around the world, including but not limited to, crewel work, needlepoint, cross-stitch, quilting, quillwork, and featherwork. Basically, anything that uses a needle, thread, and textiles and is done by hand falls under embroidery.
This why some of my cross-stitch projects are labeled as embroidery. The apperance of cross- stitch projects and embroidery projects are obviously different as sub-groups. However, they both use a simple needle with thread pulled through fabric to create a beautiful work of art.
